Is The Spread free to attend?

Yes! The Spread is a free virtual event and community hackathon happening October 1–2, 2026. Anyone is welcome to join.

What is a hackathon?

The Spread hackathon is an opportunity for nonprofits to implement the new tools featured in the live product launch right away. You don’t need to be a tech expert to join in! You’ll be able to choose a playbook with self-guided templates and either get to work solo or join a hackathon meetup to build alongside other nonprofits.

How do I participate in The Spread?

The Spread has two parts. First, join the virtual livestream event on Oct. 1 at 2 PM ET. In this hour-long program, you’ll see new Givebutter features in action and learn how nonprofits are using them to solve pressing problems.

The Hackathon begins right after the livestream ends—grab a playbook, join an optional in-person or virtual hackathon meetup, and build a solution for a problem your organization is facing within 24 hours. Participating in the hackathon isn’t required, but we highly encourage you to do so!

What can I build in the hackathon?

The Spread livestream will cover four core issue areas and showcase the tools nonprofits are using to solve each problem. You can choose from any of these topics and pick a playbook to work from. The playbooks include guided project templates, so you don’t ever have to start from scratch, and projects are designed to be finished within 24 hours.

Have a different idea? Great! The sky’s the limit—and you’ve got a huge changemaker community to support you as you build.

When does everything start and end?

The Spread begins with an hour-long virtual livestream event on October 1 at 2 PM ET.

The hackathon kicks off immediately afterward at 3:00 PM ET and runs through October 2 at 3:00 PM ET. Optional virtual and local meetups will take place throughout the 24-hour experience. More details coming soon!

Will the keynote be recorded?

Yes, you will be able to watch the full presentation and access all of the playbooks after The Spread.
