Wrapping up its fourth year in a row, Givebutter Gives Back for Black Philanthropy Month (BPM) always feels like a party. What butter way to recognize Black changemakers and join the global call to action for greater equity in philanthropic funding than by giving money directly to Black-led nonprofits?
Keep reading for the full spread on Givebutter Gives Back for BPM 2025—the numbers, the impact, and the 10 inspiring campaigns that got a slice of $10K.
Black Philanthropy Month 2025 in review
Every August, Givebutter takes part in Black Philanthropy Month, the international movement that shines a bright light on the persistent racial disparities in funding for Black-led organizations while also lifting up the rich history of Black giving, the resilience of Black communities across the world, and the Black leaders who are charting a course forward.
Givebutter committed $10K to Black-led organizations this August, inviting nonprofits to submit their fundraising campaigns to be considered for a donation. This year, changemakers blew us away, with 468 campaigns submitted, raising a record-breaking total of $572K from more than 1,900 individual donors.

This year was extra special because Floyd Jones, Givebutter’s beloved former Director of Community and Partnerships, who spearheaded the first Givebutter Gives Back initiative for BPM in 2022, was recently named Global Chair of Black Philanthropy Month! Even more exciting, Floyd now houses the entire BPM initiative under his own organization, BackBlack.
We got to sit down with Floyd for an interview about this full-circle moment and hosted a special webinar in which Floyd shared how any changemaker can transform a small campaign into a movement.
Givebutter also shared a number of updated resources for BPM this August, including updated lists of awesome Black-led organizations, grant opportunities, and Black philanthropists and foundations that should be on every changemaker’s radar.
The best part? We also checked in with some of our 2024 donation recipients about what made their Givebutter campaigns so successful last year and how they’re rallying their communities in 2025 and beyond. Check out what Black in Marine Science and Gabrielle’s Wings had to say!

Why Black Philanthropy Month is more critical than ever
Black-led nonprofits that participated in this year’s Black Philanthropy Month initiative surfaced powerful truths about the state of fundraising equity.
In response to a survey we sent to all applicants, nearly every respondent (97%) reported struggling to access major donors, and over half pointed to staff capacity and limited networks as ongoing barriers. Many shared that while their organizations drive transformational change in their communities, donors only sometimes or rarely recognize their unique value.
Policy and funding changes are also compounding these challenges. Almost half of nonprofits (48%) said federal tax shifts and cuts to social programs have already had a significant impact on their ability to operate or grow. When asked which fundraising models were hardest to sustain, monthly donor programs, major gifts, and corporate sponsorships topped the list.
Survey highlights:
- 97% cited access to major donors as a major barrier.
- 62% face challenges with staff capacity.
- 55% struggle with grant access and limited networks.
- Nearly 3 in 4 orgs said donors only sometimes or rarely recognize their unique value.
- 48% reported being significantly impacted by recent policy and funding changes.
- Most challenging fundraising types: monthly donors and major gifts.
These findings underscore why Black Philanthropy Month isn’t just about celebration—it’s about pushing for systemic change and sustainable support for Black-led nonprofits.
